You do not need to know that a person is disguised to attempt to unmask them. However, unmasking an individual is an invasive search, and even if an individual is not disguised, they will likely not consent to having their hair tugged to check for a wig, or their nose tweaked to see if it's a prosthetic. Unmasking yourself removes your disguise.

Disguising yourself

Disguises can be bought from the Dredger merchant in town, Mireva. Once purchased, you can select Edit Disguise on the radial menu to create a false identity, creating a new name, description, portrait, head, coloring and voiceset.

After you've saved the disguise, you can use Apply Disguise on the radial menu to apply it, and Remove Disguise to remove the disguise and revert back to your normal appearance.

Detecting disguises

Detecting a disguise is an opposed roll. If you suspect someone is using a disguise, you can examine them and click the Suspect button. This rolls your Investigation + Perception against their Deception + Performance. For every 2m they are away from you, the disguised individual gets an additional +1 bonus. Rolls are done in secret. You may also use the /suspect text command.

If you succeed in the roll, and the individual is disguised, the game will tell you that they are disguised and add a red "(Disguised)" note to their name that only you can see. If you fail in the roll, or if they are not disguised, you will be told that you don't detect any disguises.

Each time you suspect someone, whether correctly or not, you gain +1 Paranoia. When you suspect another player, you roll 1d10 for each point of Paranoia you have. If you roll a 1 on any of these dice, you falsely believe they are disguised, even if they are not. In other words, a player who is too suspicious is going to see disguises where there are none. Your current Paranoia and the chance of you getting a false positive is recorded in the examine window. Paranoia decreases at a rate of 1 every 4 hours.

If your Investigation + Perception is 25 more points than a disguised individual's Deception + Performance, then you will passively detect their disguise after 6 seconds if you get within 10m of them.

Unmasking disguises

Just because you know that someone is disguised, it doesn't mean you know who is under the disguise. For that, you need to unmask them with the /unmask command. If the person is not subdued or unconscious, they will get a dialog asking for their consent to be unmasked. If a person is subdued or unconscious, the unmasking can be performed without consent.

You do not need to know that a person is disguised to attempt to unmask them. However, unmasking an individual is an invasive search, and even if an individual is not disguised, they will likely not consent to having their hair tugged to check for a wig, or their nose tweaked to see if it's a prosthetic.
